Psychiatric services for every age

Serenity Family Psychiatry offers care tailored to individual needs. Psychiatric evaluation, medication management and brief psychotherapy, in person in Houston or by secure video across Texas.

How we work

What treatment looks like here

Most clients receive a combination of these. What that combination is, and how often you are seen, depends entirely on you.

Psychiatric evaluation

A full first assessment covering your history, symptoms, previous treatment and goals. This is where every plan starts.

Medication management

Careful prescribing, monitoring and review. We talk through benefits, side effects and alternatives before anything begins.

Brief psychotherapy

Short term and strategic. Coping mechanisms for stress management and practical techniques for handling the business of living.

Telehealth

Secure video appointments for clients located in Texas, with the same standard of care as an office visit.

What we treat

Conditions we support

These are the areas we see most often. If what you are dealing with is not here, please still contact us, and we will tell you honestly whether we are the right fit.

Anxiety disorders

Anxiety disorders involve excess worrying and fear coupled with physical signs such as a frequently pounding heart or restlessness. A combination of therapy and lifestyle change is usually the most effective approach, and medication can help where symptoms are severe enough to interfere with daily life.

  • Persistent worry that is hard to control
  • Racing heart, tight chest, breathlessness
  • Restlessness or feeling on edge
  • Trouble sleeping or concentrating
  • Avoiding places, people or situations
  • Panic attacks

How we help: individual work to reduce symptoms and build emotional regulation, medication management where it is appropriate, and practical stress management techniques for work and home.

Depression

Depression is more than feeling low for a few days. It affects mood, energy, sleep, appetite and the ability to take pleasure in things you used to enjoy. It is common, it is treatable, and it is not a personal failing.

  • Low mood most of the day
  • Loss of interest or pleasure
  • Fatigue and low energy
  • Changes in sleep or appetite
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness

How we help: assessment to rule out other causes, medication management where indicated, and brief psychotherapy focused on restoring routine, activity and sleep.

ADHD

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects both children and adults. It is a combined pattern of inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity that interferes with daily functioning or development, and it can influence academic and professional success, relationships and confidence. There are three presentations: predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive, and combined.

  • Difficulty sustaining attention
  • Losing or forgetting things often
  • Restlessness or fidgeting
  • Interrupting or acting without thinking
  • Trouble finishing tasks
  • Disorganisation and time blindness

How we help: there is no cure, but ADHD can be managed effectively. We offer behavioural strategies, medication and lifestyle adjustments to reduce the impact of symptoms at school, at work and in relationships.

Autism spectrum disorder

We provide psychiatric support for autistic children, teens and adults. Our focus is not on changing who someone is, but on treating the things that make daily life harder than it needs to be, and on helping families understand and support each other.

  • Co-occurring anxiety or low mood
  • Sleep difficulty
  • Attention and focus concerns
  • Sensory overwhelm and shutdowns
  • Difficulty with transitions
  • Emotional regulation support

How we help: a paced, respectful assessment, treatment of co-occurring conditions, and practical support for families and carers.

Bipolar I and II

Bipolar disorder involves shifts between depressive episodes and periods of elevated or irritable mood. Bipolar I includes full manic episodes; bipolar II involves hypomania alongside depression. Both respond well to consistent psychiatric management.

  • Periods of elevated or irritable mood
  • Reduced need for sleep
  • Racing thoughts or rapid speech
  • Impulsive or risky decisions
  • Depressive episodes in between
  • Disrupted work or relationships

How we help: mood stabilisation, careful medication management and monitoring, plus early warning sign planning so episodes can be caught sooner.

Post-traumatic stress disorder

PTSD can follow any experience that overwhelmed your ability to cope, whether that was a single event or something that went on for years. Symptoms are a normal response to an abnormal situation, and they can be treated.

  • Flashbacks and intrusive memories
  • Nightmares and broken sleep
  • Avoiding reminders
  • Feeling constantly on guard
  • Irritability or anger
  • Numbness or detachment

How we help: a safe, paced approach that you set the speed of. We treat sleep, hypervigilance and mood alongside the trauma itself, and never push you to talk before you are ready.

Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia affects how a person thinks, feels and interprets reality. With consistent treatment and support, many people manage the condition well and live full, independent lives.

  • Hearing or seeing things others do not
  • Fixed beliefs others do not share
  • Disorganised thinking or speech
  • Withdrawal from others
  • Reduced motivation
  • Difficulty with daily tasks

How we help: ongoing psychiatric management, regular medication review to balance benefit against side effects, and coordination with family and other services where you want that.

Grief and loss

Grief is not an illness, but it can become overwhelming, and it can tip into depression. Whether you have lost a person, a relationship, your health or a way of life, there is space here to work through it.

  • Waves of sadness or numbness
  • Sleep and appetite changes
  • Difficulty functioning day to day
  • Guilt or anger
  • Withdrawal from others
  • Grief that is not easing over time

How we help: supportive work at your pace, with treatment for the sleep, mood and appetite changes that often come alongside bereavement.

Personality disorders

Personality disorders affect how a person relates to themselves and to others, often in patterns that have been present for a long time. Change is slower here, but it is real, and it lasts.

  • Intense or unstable relationships
  • Strong emotional swings
  • Fear of abandonment
  • Unstable sense of self
  • Impulsive or self-damaging behaviour
  • Difficulty trusting others

How we help: steady, consistent support focused on emotional regulation, relationships and building a life that feels more stable, with medication where it helps specific symptoms.

Who we see

Care across the whole family

Mental health rarely affects just one person. We support individuals of every age, and we work with families as a whole where that is useful.

Children & adolescents

Assessment and treatment for younger clients, with parents and guardians involved throughout. School and home strategies included.

Adults

One to one psychiatric care for working adults, students and parents, with appointment times that fit around real life.

Older adults

Care that accounts for physical health, other medications and life changes such as retirement, bereavement and isolation.

Families

Support for families trying to understand a diagnosis and work out how best to help someone they care about.

Couples

Where a mental health condition is affecting a relationship, we can work with both partners together.

French speakers

Appointments available in French as well as English, so nothing important gets lost in translation.
